In this article, we will explore Ajinkya Rahane’s career journey, achievements, and role in different game formats.

Early Life and Cricket Journey

Ajinkya Rahane started playing cricket on a matted wicket in Dombivli, a suburb near Mumbai. He did not have many resources, but his passion and family support helped him move forward. At the age of 17, he started professional training.

He impressed everyone in Ranji Trophy by scoring over 1000 runs in his second season. Despite his success, he had to wait to enter the Indian national team because there were many strong batsmen at the time.

International Debut and Breakthrough

Rahane got his first big break in 2011 when he was selected for T20 and ODI matches against England. He impressed everyone with a 61-run knock on his T20 debut and 40 runs in his ODI debut.

However, after the return of senior players, Rahane had to sit out for many months. His patience and positive attitude helped him stay focused during this time.

Test Career: Rahane’s True Strength

Ajinkya Rahane finally got his Test debut in 2013 against Australia. Though his first match didn’t go well, he showed his true class in the next series.

One of his best performances came during the Boxing Day Test in South Africa in 2013, where he scored 96 runs under pressure. He followed that with an impressive century at Lord’s in 2014, helping India win a Test at the iconic ground after 28 years.

He also scored a brilliant 147 runs at MCG against Australia during the same year. His solid technique and calm nature made him one of India’s best batsmen in foreign conditions.

ODI and T20 Career

Ajinkya Rahane has also played 90 ODIs and 20 T20Is for India. He played in the 2015 Cricket World Cup and contributed with a crucial 79-run knock against South Africa. However, due to the competition for spots in the team, Rahane couldn’t secure a permanent place in limited-overs formats.

Still, whenever he got the opportunity, he gave his best. In the 2017 West Indies tour, Rahane was the highest run-scorer in the ODI series.

IPL Career: The Consistent Performer

Ajinkya Rahane began his IPL journey with the Mumbai Indians but got limited chances. His real success came after joining the Rajasthan Royals. In the 2012 IPL season, he scored over 550 runs including his first IPL century.

Rahane is known for his consistency and ability to rotate the strike. Over the years, he has also played for teams like Rising Pune Supergiant, Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Chennai Super Kings. As of 2025, he has played 197 IPL matches and scored 5017 runs with an average of 30.59.

Rahane’s Style and Personality

Ajinkya Rahane is different from the modern cricketer with flashy style and loud behavior. He is quiet, focused, and believes in hard work. He is often seen as a team player who puts the team’s needs above personal milestones.

His technique and discipline make him stand out, especially when playing in tough overseas conditions. While others may struggle with bounce or swing, Rahane’s solid footwork and clean shots help him succeed.

Challenges and Comebacks

Rahane’s career has seen ups and downs. After a long poor form, he was dropped from the Indian team in 2022. But like a true fighter, he worked hard and made a comeback in 2023.

He has always proven that determination and patience are just as important as talent. Young cricketers can learn a lot from Rahane’s journey – never give up and always stay focused on your goal.

Legacy and Contribution

Ajinkya Rahane’s contribution to Indian cricket is huge. He has been a savior in foreign conditions, a dependable middle-order batsman, and even a captain when needed.

Though he is not always in the limelight, his performances speak for themselves. His Test average of 38.46 in 85 matches and a record of scoring centuries in every major Test-playing nation shows his value.

Conclusion: The Unsung Hero

Ajinkya Rahane may not be the loudest voice in the dressing room, but he is surely one of the strongest pillars of Indian cricket. He shows us that success comes with discipline, humility, and focus.

From playing on dusty grounds in Dombivli to shining on international stages, Ajinkya Rahane has come a long way. He remains a true role model for aspiring cricketers who believe in quiet hard work over flashy fame.
